Red Rock Canyon- Still Lots of Snow and Ice

From a quick glance Red Rock seems free of snow and ice, but looks can be deceiving. Almost all north and west facing routes will have snow and ice. Here's why: The sun is still low in the southern sky, hence those north and west facing routes do not get much sun on them.

To make matters worse the little bit of snow that does melt turns into ice due to the night time temperatures falling below freezing. Most of the ice is visible, but some of it is so clear you do not see it until it's too late.

We hike Kraft Mtn. East Route and descended the north face with the new variation near the bottom. Everyone really liked this route. It's a longer hike, more scrambling and very little loose rock!

The good news is the temperatures are going to soar into the 60's this weekend. That will help a lot.
