I just found you have to get a permit to do the Mountaineers Route even as day hike. This is new for 2008. It get worse: The only way to get a permit is to enter a lottery, and then the group size is limited to 15. Cost is $15 per person, but is refundable if you do not get a permit.
This rule also applies to Mt. Russell and any peak via the north fork of Pine Creek a.k.a the Mountaineers Route.
