The Wave: Permits now by Lottery

If you have been lucky enough to get permits for the Wave in the past, you are going to need a lot more luck now. Basically the BLM has replaced the old system (getting permits via the internet) with a lottery system via the internet. Here's what you have to do:
Up to four months in advance of the dates you want to hike the Wave, go to this site:
https://www.blm.gov/az/paria/obtainpermits.cfm?usearea=CB and click on Lottery Application. Pick three dates.
Type in your name, email address, number of permits, and fill out the verification field.
Make sure to check the box stating you understand the $5.00 is non-refundable.
Now click on Submit Lottery Application
Fill out the appropriate information on the next page.
You are not guaranteed a permit.
You will find out via email if you got a permit(s).
Many of the popular months have over 100 requests.
The old method is still available, but lottery applications will be filled first. If there are still openings then you can get a permit the first day of the month at 11am (PST) via the internet. This is very unlikely anymore.

  1. Hi Branch,
Came across your blog and was interested in the permit system for "The Wave" (and what the WAVE actually is.) Tried the link you had posted there and it was dead. Tried a few more variations and got the same result. Would you be able to check it???
Enjoyed reading the other information there, VERY different to Australia.
    Thanks in advance, Frank

  2. Hmmm... I just tried the link and it worked, but since this is a BLM site, who knows what could be wrong. Actually five of us applied for permits via the lottery using that link...?
