Gryptonite is a Winner

I recently bought a pair on Montrail approach shoes with Gryptonite soles. After two hikes, I am happy to report Gryptonite is as good as Stealth rubber. This means we now have two kinds of shoes that really stick to sandstone. Vasque is the predominate company that features approach shoes with Stealth rubber. As far as I know Montrail is the only company carrying shoes with Gryptonite soles.

Today we hiked to White Rock Hills Peak via the southern route and we descended through Surprise Canyon. We set additional cairns along the route. Eric looked around and found the summit register well below the peak. The descent route through Surprise Canyon is easy to follow with numerous cairns, but I have not published it yet.

  1. Gryptonite is a brand name that covers several different compounds. Which one did you test?

  2. Gryptonite GS.
GS is non-marking like GT but emphasizes friction over hardness. It's combine with GT to deliver the best of both worlds: Stick on rock and fail-safe traction on trails.
